Surname origins

Fish

Directly from the Yiddish fish, and related to the German fisch. Generally describes the occupation of fisherman, but sometimes imposed by government officials in a derogatory way to imply 'fish-like' or 'fish-looking' when names were assigned by edict in the late 1700s. Western Ashkenazic Jewish origin.
