Pre-Bar Mitzvah photograph circa April-May 1932. Joseph's Bar Mitzvah, planned as a large family gathering in Philadelphia, was abruptly cancelled due to the death of his maternal grandmother, Rachel Chava Shalita, in early May 1932. A small ceremony, held in State College some weeks later, was attended only by his parents and a few State College students.
